AI Marketing for Small Businesses: A Practical Guide

    VCBy Vincent Carrié

Guide for AI marketing for small businesses

A podcaster asked us recently how they were supposed to use AI for marketing when they already barely had time to record the actual podcast.

    Fair question.

They'd heard about AI agents, content generation, automation and all the other things apparently about to change marketing forever.

But none of that really answered the question:

"What should I actually use AI for?"

That's what this guide is about.

We work in marketing every day, so we've had plenty of opportunities to test where AI genuinely saves time and where it just creates more work.

The short answer is that AI is very good at the repetitive stuff.

It is very bad at being you.

Used properly, it can help a small team do considerably more marketing without spending every evening writing captions, editing emails or staring at a blank content calendar.

Used badly, you end up with 50 bland posts nobody reads.

    Let's look at the difference.

What does AI marketing actually mean?

Strip away the hype and AI marketing is fairly simple.

You're using AI to help with some of the work involved in planning, creating, publishing and analysing your marketing.

    That could mean:

    • writing social posts

    • planning a content calendar

    • creating ad variations

    • researching SEO topics

    • drafting blog articles

    • writing emails

    • repurposing existing content

    • analysing campaign results

    • creating images

    • scheduling and publishing content

If you want the broader picture first, our guide on how to use AI for marketing goes through the different ways AI can fit into an actual marketing workflow.

    The important distinction is this:

You're not trying to make AI your marketing director.

You're giving it the work that doesn't need you sitting there doing every step manually.

For a small business, that can make a big difference.

Why AI marketing matters more for small businesses

A large company can have someone whose entire job is social media.

    Another person handles email.

    Someone else works on SEO.

    Someone else manages paid advertising.

You might be doing all four.

You might also be answering emails, dealing with customers, sending invoices and actually delivering whatever it is your business sells.

That's why AI can be particularly useful for small businesses.

The problem isn't necessarily a lack of ideas.

    It's time.

You know you should post more often.

You know your website needs better content.

You know you should send an email.

You know your Google Ads could probably do with some attention.

    And then Friday arrives.

AI won't solve every marketing problem.

But it can make the work considerably less painful.

What are the benefits of AI for small business marketing?

The first benefit isn't necessarily more sales.

    It's time.

That's easy to overlook because every AI company seems to promise some version of "10x your marketing".

We're more interested in something much less exciting:

Does it give you back a few hours every week?

    That adds up.

    Speed

    The blank page disappears.

Instead of starting with nothing, you've got something to work with.

    Consistency

Most small businesses don't have a content problem.

    They have a consistency problem.

They post five times one week, disappear for three weeks, then wonder why social media isn't doing much.

AI makes keeping things moving easier.

    More output without more headcount

One person can potentially handle work that would previously have required several people.

    Not perfectly.

    Not completely automatically.

But enough to make a real difference.

    Less repetitive work

Copying content between platforms, rewriting the same message five different ways and producing endless variations is exactly the sort of work AI is good at.

You don't need to love that work.

You just need to stop doing all of it yourself.

Where can AI actually help with marketing?

    Here's where it gets useful.

    1. Social media

Social media is probably the easiest place for a small business to start.

    AI can help you:

    • generate content ideas

    • create captions

    • adapt content for different platforms

    • build content calendars

    • repurpose blog posts

    • create calls to action

    • generate alternative versions

    • schedule and publish content

    But there is a catch.

AI should not become your social media personality.

If you ask AI to create 30 generic posts about your business, you'll probably get 30 posts that sound like every other business using AI.

    Give it context.

Tell it who your customers are.

    Tell it how you speak.

Give it examples of previous content.

Tell it what you don't want to say.

    Then edit the result.

If social media is your main problem, see how Purple+ handles social media publishing and automation or our guide to posting to all social media from one app.

    2. SEO and content

SEO can be incredibly time-consuming for a small business.

    AI can help with:

    • keyword research

    • content ideas

    • article outlines

    • first drafts

    • internal linking

    • on-page optimisation

    • rewriting

    • content repurposing

But this is one area where you need to be particularly careful.

You don't need another 2,000-word article explaining something that 500 other websites have already explained.

Your advantage is that you've actually done the thing.

Use AI to structure the article.

Then add the details only you can provide.

    The customer story.

    The mistake you made.

The thing you discovered after doing it 50 times.

    The opinion you actually have.

    That's the useful stuff.

AI makes getting that experience onto the page faster.

Purple+ connects to Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 and can create long-form SEO content in your tone, then publish approved content to WordPress or Shopify. See Purple+.

    3. Email marketing

If you've got an email list, use it.

It sounds obvious, but plenty of businesses collect email addresses and then send approximately one email every six months.

    AI can help create:

    • newsletters

    • promotions

    • welcome sequences

    • follow-ups

    • re-engagement campaigns

    • subject lines

    • different versions for different audiences

It can also help you get more from content you've already created.

    For example:

    Blog post

    Email newsletter

    LinkedIn post

    Instagram post

    Ad creative

That's where AI starts getting interesting.

You're not asking it to invent five different things.

You're getting more mileage from one useful piece of content.

Purple+ connects with Mailchimp and Brevo as part of its marketing platform, so the AI can sit inside the workflow you're already using rather than forcing you to create another separate email system.

    4. Google Ads and paid advertising

AI can take a lot of the repetitive work out of advertising.

    It can help create:

    • headlines

    • descriptions

    • ad variations

    • creative concepts

    • landing page copy

    • keyword ideas

    • campaign structures

    • performance summaries

Purple+ can create Search and Display campaigns with AI, send them directly to your connected Google Ads account and bring the campaign results back into the same workspace. See Purple+ Google Ads management.

For Facebook and Instagram, Purple+ Meta Ads management can create campaign assets, publish campaigns to Meta and bring the results back into Purple+.

We've also gone deeper into how to use AI for Google Ads management and AI ad creative.

The important bit is not to confuse:

    "AI can create my ads"

    with:

"I can now ignore my advertising."

You still need to understand the business, the audience, the budget and what you're actually trying to achieve.

AI is very good at producing options.

You're still the one who decides which options are worth paying for.

    5. Images and creative

AI image generation is particularly useful for small businesses that don't have a designer sitting next to them.

    You can create visuals for:

    • social media

    • advertising

    • blog articles

    • promotions

    • website content

without starting from a stock-photo library every time.

But generic AI imagery has a problem.

    It looks generic.

If every competitor is using the same shiny laptop, purple gradient and person staring thoughtfully at a screen, nobody is differentiating themselves.

The better approach is to give AI your actual brand context.

    Your colours.

    Your visual style.

    Your products.

    Your audience.

    Your existing creative.

The objective isn't to make something that looks "AI".

It's to make something that looks like your business.

Purple+ generates brand-aware creative using your brand colours and logo, rather than treating every image as a blank canvas. See how Purple+ works.

The three ways small businesses use AI for marketing

    There are broadly three approaches.

    Approach

    What it looks like

    Best for

    The problem

    General AI chatbot

Ask ChatGPT or Claude for copy, then copy and paste it into other platforms

    Brainstorming and occasional tasks

It writes, but you still do the publishing and admin

    Specialist AI tools

One tool for social, another for SEO, another for email and another for ads

Businesses with time to manage multiple tools

More subscriptions, logins and disconnected workflows

    AI marketing platform

One system handles multiple marketing tasks from a connected workflow

Small teams that want marketing done without managing lots of tools

Individual specialist tools may offer more depth in one area

There's nothing wrong with using ChatGPT.

    We use AI tools ourselves.

The problem starts when your marketing workflow becomes:

    ChatGPT → copy → Canva → scheduler → Google Ads → email platform → analytics → spreadsheet

At that point, you've automated the content creation and kept all the admin.

    That's not really the dream.

Purple+ is built around the third approach. It combines social, paid advertising, SEO, email, website work and marketing automation in one platform. Explore Purple+.

    Purple+ AI Marketing Connectors

    A realistic AI marketing workflow

Forget "AI does your marketing while you sleep".

Here's what good actually looks like.

    1. Brief it

    Tell your AI what's happening.

    Maybe you've got:

    • a new product

    • an offer

    • an event

    • a seasonal promotion

    • a new blog

    • an interesting customer story

    You don't need a 40-page brief.

Tell it what's actually going on.

    2. Create the first version

Get it to produce the week's social content.

    Maybe an email.

    Maybe a blog article.

    Maybe some advertising variations.

This is where the time saving starts.

    3. Check it

This is the bit you shouldn't skip.

    Read it.

    Check the facts.

Add the details only you know.

Make sure it actually sounds like your business.

    4. Approve and publish

    Once you're happy, schedule it.

The whole point is to remove unnecessary admin, not move the admin somewhere else.

Purple+ includes approval workflows, scheduling and publishing as part of its wider marketing automation platform.

    5. Look at what happened

Spend a few minutes looking at the previous week's results.

    What worked?

    What didn't?

    What generated enquiries?

What was a complete waste of time?

Feed that information into the next campaign.

    That's the loop:

    Brief → create → check → publish → learn.

    Purple+ AI Marketing Analytics

The biggest mistake small businesses make with AI

    It's buying too many tools.

We've seen this plenty of times.

    One tool for social.

    One for SEO.

    One for email.

    One for images.

    One for advertising.

    One for video.

    One for scheduling.

One more because somebody posted about it on LinkedIn.

Eventually the business is spending more time managing its AI tools than actually marketing itself.

The problem isn't necessarily that any of those tools are bad.

It's that the workflow is fragmented.

That's why we built Purple+ around one connected marketing workflow rather than another collection of disconnected AI tools.

If you want to understand what that looks like in practice, see Purple+ marketing automation.

How to start using AI for marketing this week

    Don't try to automate everything.

Pick the thing you hate doing most.

If you're constantly struggling with social media, start there.

If you've got an email list that hasn't heard from you since February, start there.

If your website needs content, start there.

If you're spending hours writing Google Ads, start there.

    Get one workflow working.

    Then add another.

You don't need an AI marketing department.

You need a marketing process that you can actually keep up with.

    Where does Purple+ fit?

This is essentially why we built Purple+.

We work with small businesses and know how quickly marketing turns into a collection of tabs, subscriptions and things you're supposed to remember to do every Tuesday.

    Purple+ takes a different approach.

One AI marketing agent. Social, ads, SEO and email. One chat.

You can use it to create content, work on campaigns, publish to your connected channels and bring marketing activity into one workflow.

It also learns your brand, so you're not starting from scratch every time you ask it to create something.

See how Purple+ works and start with the free plan if you want to try it without committing to another subscription.

If you're particularly interested in automating the repetitive side of marketing, see Purple+ marketing automation.

AI marketing doesn't mean removing humans

This is probably the most important point.

    The goal isn't:

    AI instead of humans.

    It's:

AI doing more of the work humans don't need to spend their time doing.

A business owner should still decide:

    • what the business stands for

    • who it wants to reach

    • what it wants to sell

    • what offers it wants to make

    • what it is comfortable saying

    • what success looks like

AI can then help turn those decisions into actual marketing.

    That's a much better relationship.

    AI is fast.

    It isn't accountable.

    It doesn't know your customers.

And it occasionally says something with complete confidence that is spectacularly wrong.

    Keep a human involved.

So, is AI marketing worth it for a small business?

    Yes.

Provided you're using it to solve an actual problem.

If you're already struggling to keep up with social media, content, advertising, SEO or email, AI can remove a significant amount of repetitive work.

    But don't start by asking:

"Which AI tool should I buy?"

    Start with:

"Which part of my marketing is taking too much of my time?"

Then find the simplest way to improve it.

For some businesses, that's a general AI tool.

For others, it's a collection of specialist tools.

For others, an AI marketing platform makes more sense.

The point isn't to use AI everywhere.

It's to make marketing easier to do consistently.

    The bottom line

Small businesses don't need to become AI experts.

They need to get better at using AI to get marketing done.

    Start with one repetitive task.

    Automate part of it.

    See what happens.

    Then build from there.

The businesses getting the most from AI won't necessarily be the ones using the most AI.

They'll be the ones that have worked out what they don't need to do themselves.
